Moving Bed Biofilm Reactors

MBBR utilizes the microorganisms that attach and grow on the high surface area porous solids called “carrier” in the wastewater medium. The fundamental role of the carriers is to provide protected surface for “biofilm” growth.

Biofilm: complex colony structures composed of microorganisms and bio-matter secreted by them.

Carriers which have density near water float and circulate in the wastewater freely by aeration bubbles (aerobic) or mechanical mixing (anaerobic).

Circulation of the carriers in water regulates and stabilizes the biofilm growth and reaction kinetics.

The most essential design parameters of MBBR process are carriers’: filling fraction and specific surface area.The biofilm cleans the water by consuming organic matter, nutrients and contaminations via biochemical reactions.

Carrier Media Retention Screen

Stainless steel wedge wire screens retain the cultivated biofilm / media in a process-designated reactor while allowing the treated wastewater and sloughed biofilm to flow through to the next treatment phase.

Strategically-placed retention screens ensure all biomass and the bio-carriers remain in their respective zones for the duration of the plant’s life. Screens are available in cylindrical or flat models, depending on a facility’s needs and utilize either a wedge wire or perforated plate design. Each screen has a specific opening allowing for smooth operation with the smallest number of screens, while also creating minimum head loss per stage.

Screen supports are designed to withstand the buoyant forces of media and accommodate the full weight of media during draining. All supports are sized by structural engineers and supplied as integral components of each customized system.
